Add new Publishing Model: "Embargoed" or "Restricted"?
Hi, working through the Érudit title list there are journals such as Acadiensis (https://www.erudit.org/en/journals/acadiensis/authors/) that restrict access to articles in their current issues to subscribers, but make their archived issues openly accessible.
While I could use “Subscription” as the publishing model, that doesn't really capture how it works. “Embargoed” would be more accurate, and aligns with the terminology we use when dealing with content aggregators who often have 6, 12, or 24 month embargos on the latest content.
Érudit itself uses the term “Restricted”, which is less precise in my opinion. But that would still be better than having to choose between “Open Access”, “Hybrid”, or “Subscription”.

Hi Dan,
Thanks for bringing up this point about Érudit and journals like Acadiensis. We understand that the current "Open Access," "Hybrid," or "Subscription" options don't fully capture the nuances of an embargoed publishing model where only archival content becomes openly accessible. You're right, "Embargoed" is indeed a more precise term for that scenario.
We have good news for you regarding our release this week:
New Customisation Options for Publishing Models
You'll now be able to edit the publishing model icons to better suit your specific needs. We hope this new flexibility will allow you to more accurately represent these complex scenarios within the tool.
The JST is primarily designed to help researchers identify journals for immediate Open Access publishing. We define Open Access as content that is freely available right away, without an embargo period. This aligns with our mission to guide researchers toward truly open publishing.
Please try out the new customisation features and let us know if they help you address this particular challenge. If you find you still need a better way to express these complexities, don't hesitate to reach out to us at support@scifree.se and we will find a way to communicate such complexities, together.
